Hydra: The Animal That Wouldn't Die

I found this video about Hydra, a tiny freshwater animal, to be fascinating. These animals, which reproduce when they are just two days old, should be expected to die after about a month. The hydra being studied (and fed) have now been alive for over 8 years. What's the hydra's secret? Watch the video. Learn what you can about the story. Leave your thoughts in a comment below.

1. What's so neat about hydra? How do they live so long? Explain anything that you found interesting about the animal and/or video.
2. What does this story have to do with cells?
3. Anything else? Feel free to share!

  4. I think the neatest thing about the hydra is that it lives so long. They get new cells every 20 days, which gets rid of the cells that get old that make us die.

  5. I think the hydra was very interesting because it replaces its cells.

  6. 1: Something that's so neat about a hydra is that it can't die. It's cells can't get old and die. Their cells are replaced every so often, and they stay new.

2: The Hydras cells never die. They are constantly replaced by new ones.

3: Hyrdas are so cool and wow! That is so cool how they can just can replace themselves and not die, even when they are cut in half.
